Sturgeon Lake

Social, fun-loving, and perfectly situated, Sturgeon Lake boasts lock-free boating into the biggest and most bustling towns of the Kawarthas – Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, and Bobcaygeon.

Water flows into Sturgeon Lake from Lock 34 in Fenelon Falls and from the Scugog River in the South, and from there flows East into Pigeon Lake through the Bobcaygeon lock. Water levels are regulated by Parks Canada, with levels remaining relatively stable through the year – highest in the spring, and lowest in the fall.

The “Y” shape of the lake gives Sturgeon Lake 3 distinct points of travel for avid boaters – Fenelon Falls in the West (connecting Sturgeon to Cameron), Bobcaygeon in the East (connecting Sturgeon to Pigeon), and Lindsay in the South (connecting Sturgeon to Scugog).  Sturgeon Lake is home to over 2000 homes and cottages, with average frontages of 70-100ft. Most properties are level, with sandy, rocky, or natural shorelines, with much of the Western shoreline of the lake rocky and shallow. The lake is approximately 25km long and 3km wide, with a maximum depth of around 30ft.

Geography, Topography, & Ecology

Destination boating is the name of the game on Sturgeon Lake. With lock-free boating into Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon, and Lindsay, residents of Sturgeon enjoy easy trips “into town” for lunch, dinner, or a quick ice cream all summer long. With it’s long (for the Kawartha’s) length, Sturgeon is also a popular lake for large power boats.

Unique to Sturgeon Lake are also two golf courses accessible by water – Sturgeon Point Golf Club and Eganridge Resort. Both courses are located on the northern shore of the lake and offer docking for golfers looking to throw their clubs in the boat and get in a quick 9 along the lakefront. There is also Sturgeon Point Sailing Club, offering Canada's CANSail curriculum programs for children aged 8 to 17.

Watersports can be a mixed offering on Sturgeon. Due to it’s large size and stretches of open water, with a bit of wind the lake can kick up waves and whitecaps quickly, making skiing and tubing hit or miss. However, swimmers can enjoy warm summer swims due to the lake’s shallower nature. Anglers can expect to hook bass, muskie, and walleye.
