Four Mile Lake

Panoramic views and warm, calm waters. Four Mile Lake boasts exclusivity, community, and stewardship.

Unique to the Kawarthas, Four Mile lake is almost entirely spring fed, with no navigable access to or from other lakes. Running north-south, Four Mile lies directly atop two distinct geographical regions, which effectively divides the lake into two unique sections. The Northern part of the lake, with it’s granite outcroppings and pines, is characteristic of the Canadian Shield. Shorelines are shallow and gradual, with slowly sloping rocks into the water. The Southern part of the lake, situated in the limestone belt more characteristic of rest of the Kawarthas, sees deeper water and often steeper elevation.

Prevailing winds from the West typically create choppy shorelines along the Eastern part of most lakes. Due to it’s narrow North-South nature, Four Mile Lake is calm. True to it’s name, Four Mile Lake is approximately 4mi long by 1mi wide, with a maximum depth of 60 feet (towards the South end). There are approximately 450 homes and cottages that share the shores of Four Mile Lake. Water levels are mostly stable, with spring levels being the highest due to thaw, rainfall, and runoff, with a slight dip in levels in the fall.

Geography, Topography, & Ecology

A happily landlocked lake, Four Mile Lake sees mostly local boating and fishing. There is one public boat launch, with limited hours, that keeps non-local traffic very low. Calm and mostly deep, unencumbered waters make Four Mile an excellent lake for skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and cruising. Similarly, expect excellent swimming on Four Mile. Shallow and wade-in at the north, and deep and divable as you move south.

Resident fishermen benefit from a healthy lake that is mostly closed off from outside traffic, and can expect to reel in large and smallmouth bass, rock bass, yellow perch, walleye, and muskie. Near Four Mile Lake is access to the Victoria Rail Trail, offering 85km of trail riding and hiking. In the winter, the frozen lake lends itself well to skating rinks, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Vibe Check

Lake pride and a strong sense of community and stewardship are prevalent on Four Mile Lake. Home to an active lake association, residents and cottagers strive to “preserve, promote and protect the beauty and integrity of Four Mile Lake and the surrounding area” (Four Mile Lake Association). A bit of a juxtaposition, this private, stand-alone lake is anything but anti-social, with many annual community-run events organized by neighbours that are happy to spend their mornings, happy hours, and evenings together.

Four Mile Lake is the Ron Swanson of lakes – private, proud, with a big heart and a secret wild side.
